Review by K. Costner, 2009-10-23
THIS IS THE MOST FUN SURVIVAL BOOK I HAVE READ YET. WHEN LARRY DEAN OLSEN EXPLAINS THE TECHNIQUES, HE ALSO SHARES PERSONAL EXPERIENCES RELATED TO THEM. THIS IS NOT A SHOW AND TELL BOOK LIKE A REVIEW HAS SAID. HE INCLUDES PHOTOS, BUT HE ALSO DOES A EXCELLENT JOB OF EXPLAINING HOW TO DO THE DIFFERENT SKILLS. THE STRENGH OF THIS BOOK IS DETAILS. HE EXPLAINS EVEN THE SMALLEST SKILLS WITH PLENTY OF DETAILS AND EXPLAINATIONS. EVEN IF THIS BOOK DIDN`T HAVE ANY PHOTOS, IT CONTAINS SUCH DETAILS AND DESCRIPTIONS THAT YOU STILL COULD LEARN MUCH FROM THIS BOOK. IF YOU LIVE IN THE WESTERN STATES SUCH AS: ARIZONA, UTAH, NEW MEXICO, NEVADA ETC...THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK FOLKS.... AS HE STRONGLY FOCUSES ON THE TERRAIN OF THAT PART OF THE COUNTRY INCLUDING THE DESERT, IT`S TREES, ANIMALS AND EDIBLE PLANTS FOR FOOD AND MEDICINE AND HOW TO FIND PLENTY OF WATER. IF YOU ARE LOST IN THE WILDERNESS OR YOU ARE OUT THERE BY CHOICE, THIS BOOK WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO STAY ALIVE, BUT ALSO TO LIVE WELL IN YOUR SITUATION WHETHER SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM. MOST OF WHAT IS PRESENTED CAN APPLY TO ALL STATES,COUNTRIES AND CLIMATES. IT CONTAINS POSSIBLY THE BEST CHAPTER ON BOTH TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT SHELTERS THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. I AM IN ALABAMA AND I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY VALUABLE. ALONG WITH JOHN AND GERI MCPERSON`S BOOK: ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WIDERNESS LIVING.... THEY MAKE AN AWESOME PAIR AND COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER VERY WELL. GOD BLESS

I HAD THIS BOOK BACK IN THE EIGHTIES. HAVING SPENT TIME IN THE WOODS IN THE SIXTIES I DID SOME OF THIS STUFF. I LIKE THIS BOOK. IT PUTS YOU IN THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND. NOTHING WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF DOING. WE ARE SOFT AND WEAK. MY GRAND PARENTS LIVED THIS WAY DURING THE DEPRESSION. LIVING THIS WAY WILL TAKE A LOT OUT OF YOU. WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY YOU WILL EAT ANYTHING. WHEN YOU ARE THIRSTY YOU WILL DRINK ANYTHING. AT LEAST KNOW WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT TO DRINK. KNOW HOW TO GET IT AND PROCESS IT FOR USE. HAVE SOME SIMPLE EQUIPMENT WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. LEARN THE EDIBLE WILD FOOD IN YOUR AREA. THERE ARE SOME GOOD BOOKS ABOUT THIS.
NOW, DID YOU KNOW 3 OR 4 LAYERS OF T-SHIRT WILL FILTER WATER ? WON'T TASTE GOOD BUT IT WILL WET YOUR WHISTLE AND YOU WON'T CATCH SOMETHING. A CIGARETTE LIGHTER WON'T WORK AT ALTITUDE.
GOOD BOOK. IT'S THE PLACE TO START...
Review by Stone Toolhead, 2008-11-26
Larry Dean Olsen's book is funny, informative, and full of helpful photos and illustrations. It's written by an experienced outdoorsman who's tested these techniques in the field for most of his life. For anyone interested in survival skills, this is a must-have.
Westerners will get particularly good information from the chapter on wild plant uses, as well as the color-plate appendix for plant identification. I've carried this book in field and found it a great resource on a number of occasions. (Hmmm....I don't THINK that's death camas, but maybe I should check!).
Ancient tool enthusiasts will find helpful hints for constructing useful field equipment (stone axes, knife blades, cordage, fire drills) as well as tips on constructing emergency shelters.
There's even a section on harvesting wild animals.
A great resource. If you travel a lot, I recommend you keep a copy in car for emergency situations or just some good old-fashioned exploring!

If you want to read a story about how the author thinks he can survive in the wild, this is the book for you. I bought this book many years ago and found it useless at the time. I recently got it out again and thought I would give it another try. Same thing- almost useless. The author talks about a lot of things that would probably be very good to know/learn but the trouble is that most of the things are not explained enough for a regular person to be able to figure out how to actually do them. Your money would be better spent on a real survival book and not this one.
